How to silence your ‘inner critic’, when the going gets tough.

Let’s say, for example, you’ve written a list of your top ten goals and dreams in your journal, your diary, on a post note or on a piece of scrap paper. Three months later, you find that you haven’t implemented any of your goals, or you can’t on earth find where you have put these written goals. It is at this moment, that your inner critic, will rear its head and will start tut-tutting at you or will start to make you feel bad, or even criticise you for your lack of commitment and consistency.

The first method of silencing your ‘inner critic’ is to find out where your inner critic’s reprimand is coming from. Does it come from a former friend? a former spouse or partner? or a former caregiver? or a former teacher from your younger days? or a former boss? The key is in the word ‘former’ i.e. they are no longer in your life, they have no say in your life anymore, they have no right to your time and attention. These ‘former’ naysayers have no right to your present or your future either. So show them the exit!

The second method to silencing your inner critic is to turn up the volume on your ‘inner cheer leader’. Yes, your ‘inner cheer leader’ who brings out the pom poms, with every action step you take towards achieving your goals, however small!!. Yes, your inner cheerleader who is running beside you in the marathon through life, whispering to you to keep you going, and keeps telling you that you can do it. Your ‘inner cheerleader’ who picks you up and loves and encourages you back on the road, when life pushes you down. Your inner cheerleader is the one who reminds you, that your success is around the corner when you are staring failure in the face.

Cultivate the inner cheerleader within you.
